Self Driving in Sri Lanka: What Every Traveler Must Know Before Hitting the Road

Thinking about exploring Sri Lanka behind the wheel? Many travelers love the freedom of driving themselves, but before you land and pick up the keys, there are a few rules you need to know. Here is a simple guide with everything required to stay legal and safe on the road.
Can Foreigners Drive in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lankan police have confirmed that foreign nationals with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) are legally allowed to drive in the country. If you already hold an IDP, you are good to go.
If you do not have a valid IDP, you will need to obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving license by presenting your domestic driving license from your home country.
One more important note. Driving tuk tuks is prohibited for foreigners under current government regulations. Only other light vehicles are permitted for tourist drivers.
How to Get a Temporary Driving License on Arrival
Foreign travelers can now obtain a temporary driving license right at Colombo International Airport (BIA). This new service counter, launched on 3rd August 2025, is open 24 hours a day and makes it easy for visitors who want to rent a car as soon as they arrive.
The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) operates the counter in the arrival terminal and issues temporary licenses on the spot.
Requirements
- A foreign driving license. Only full driving licenses are accepted. Probationary, provisional, temporary, or learner licenses will be rejected.
- If the license is not in English, you must provide an official translation.
- A valid passport and visa.
Important Notes
- Your foreign license must be valid for at least one more year from the date the temporary license is issued.
- Temporary conversion applies only to motorcycle and light vehicle categories.
- All restrictions listed on your original license still apply. For example, if your license requires corrective lenses, automatic transmission, or a hearing aid, you must follow those conditions while driving in Sri Lanka.
Fees
